The French created a unique culture in its colony in North America that combined Old World beliefs and systems with adaptations to the New World's conditions and Indigenous peoples.  This culture has remained an important part of the Canadian heritage and, despite conquest and rule under the English after 1763, French customs continue to influence Canada.
